Welcome to the Montana Department of Commerce Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. 

  

The MDOC Housing Division's mission is to create affordable housing opportunities for Montanans whose needs are not met by the market. We value people, families, communities, fairness, teamwork, mutual respect, and integrity. We are committed and passionate about collaborating with our partners to make sure Montana's families and communities have attainable, affordable, accessible and sustainable homes.


The Montana Department of Commerce Housing Division Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federal assistance program to help very low-income families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities afford safe, sanitary and decent housing.

The Housing Choice Voucher Program
is designed to achieve four major objectives:
 
 

• To provide improved living conditions for low and very low income families while maintaining their rent payments at an affordable level;

• To provide decent, safe, and affordable housing for eligible participants;

• To promote freedom of housing choice and integrate lower income and minority families into mainstream society;

• To provide an incentive to private property owners to rent to lower income
families by offering timely assistance payments.
 

Field agencies are responsible for ensuring that very low income families have access to all types and ranges of affordable housing in the agency’s jurisdiction. A critical element in fulfilling this responsibility is for the local field agency to ensure that a sufficient number of owners, representing all types and ranges of affordable housing in the agency’s jurisdiction, are willing to participate in the HCV program.
