The Department of Housing and Urban Development - VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program is a joint effort between HUD and VA to move Veterans and their families out of homelessness and into permanent housing. HUD provides housing assistance through its Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) that allows homeless Veterans to rent privately owned housing. VA offers eligible homeless Veterans clinical and supportive services through its health care system across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

As of September 30, 2013, HUD had allocated funding to local public housing authorities to provide more than 58,000 Housing Choice Vouchers to homeless Veterans while VA hired dedicated VA case managers to assist homeless Veterans in securing and maintaining permanent housing through intensive case management.

Safe and secure affordable housing supports stronger health and educational outcomes

The availability of high-quality affordable homes enables families to spend a greater share of household income on nutritious food, healthcare expenditures, and other essentials that promote good health.

Happy children playing.

Stable, affordable housing complements the efforts of educators, leading to better student achievement, reduced absenteeism, and reductions in student turnover rates. Affordable housing can reduce the frequency of unwanted moves that disrupt children's education and, in classrooms with high turnover rates, have negative spillover effects on teachers and classmates. Housing assistance that reduces concentrated poverty and helps families access neighborhoods of opportunity can improve children's educational achievement, leading to higher test scores and an increased likelihood of completing high school and enrolling in college.

CROW AGENCY - Crow Tribe officials and the Apsaalooke Nation Housing Authority broke ground on Thursday afternoon for a military veterans housing complex.

The "Apsaalooke Warrior Apartments" is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015.

"This has been a project that we are very proud of and has come this far with the help of so many people along the way," said Shawn Back Bone, Vice-Secretary of the Apsaalooke Nation. "Our Warriors have fought in every war ever since the Little Big Horn Battle and our warriors need a place to call home for the service they gave our country when they signed on the dotted line and gave their call of duty."

The complex will have 15 one-bedroom apartments and will include office space for supportive services and a telemedicine program.
